      <description>Title: Comparative floral ontogeny of Hydrobryum loeicum, Hy. tardhuangense and Hanseniella heterophylla (Podostemaceae)
Authors: Werukamkul, Petcharat; Ampornpan, La-aw
Abstract: In order to elucidate the floral ontogeny of certain Thai species of the subfamily Podostemoideae, the flowering shoots of Hanseniella heterophy/la, Hydrobryum loeicum and Hy. tardhuangense were observed using scanning electron microscope. In all species studied. the flowering shoots protrude from the cavities where the tufted leaves arise on the crustose root. Mostly, the two outer bracts are leaf-like interpreting that the flowering shoots are converted from the vegetative shoots. In Hanseniel/a, bracts in the early developmental stage are similar shapes but different sizes arranging in 4 rows. In the mid-stage, the ventral bracts differentiate into normally 2 lobes, occasionally 3 lobes whereas the dorsal bracts develop into long deltoid shape. In Hydrobryum, the arrangement of bracts is distichous. The spathellas in all species initiate from tissue surrounding the floral meristem. Prior to the fusion of ventral and dorsal apical margins, the spathella apices become a triangle space in Hanseniella, narrow long space in Hy. loeicum and two-lipped in Hy. tardhuangense; and the floral organs are initiated inside the spathella. The two tepal primordia, the primary androecial primordium and the gynoecial primordium are initiated simultaneously. The two stamen primordia are differentiated from the primary androcial primordium when the gynoecium changes into a cylindrical shape and two carpel primordia are initiated. These dramatic ontogenetic changes and heterochronic shifts in the initiation of floral organs are highly specialized and very distinct floral development which have not found in any families of flowering plants.

      <description>Title: A novel method for measuring total antioxidant capacity and its application to monitoring the antioxidant status in Thai herbs.
Authors: Panich, Sirirat
Abstract: A novel and simple method for measuring total antioxidant capacity or T AC in Thai herb extracts has been developed. The principle is based on generating free radical, the deep blue Imipramine radical is generated by oxidizing Imipramine by ammonium tetravanadate in acid medium that can be easily scavenged by antioxidant compounds in the sample. Decreasing in the absorption spectrum at 620 nm, related with antioxidant capacity, was detected by spectrophotometer method in the proposed of practicable and low-cost, However improvement of the throughput, Flow injection analysis (FIA) was applied. The variables affecting the signal such as pH, reagent concentrations, linear relationship was optimized. The novel assay is linear up to 2,800 mg Trolox equivalent/L, its precision value is lower than 1% RSD and these are no interference from NaOH, NaCI and N~C03' The method was applied for determination of three extract fractions of G. sootepensis. The results show the different of antioxidant capacity in each fraction with S I has the most TAC following S2 and S3, respectively. Although a good correlation of the present method was observed between two methods, DPPH and Follin Ciocalteu reagent, Finally the developed method was easy, stable, inexpensive, environmental friendly and automated measures total antioxidant capacity.

Authors: Kanthang, Paisan; Nicomrat, Duongruitai; Ritthong, Wirote
Abstract: During the rice processing, the possible situations of rice kernel cracking and breakage are commonly occurred and these consequences cause a low marketing price. According to this issue, the real-time observation and together with the knowledge base of mechanical properties should be essentially helpful in detection of these defect observations. The objective of this work was established to study the mechanical stress-strain properties of rice kernels via our in-house pneumatic system design. We found that stress-strain of RD6, RD15, Phitsanulok 2 and Khao Dawk Mali 105 were greater than Khao'Yipun DOAI with moisture content of 20% w.b. These results tentatively indicated the mechanical stress-strains occurred were from the difference of rice shapes. Moreover, we could recognize that the characteristics of these various shapes significantly followed the scaling law of the relation between strain and time. We also found that the breaking force was different value for rice varieties. This parameter obtained can be such a high potential approach that can be used for further developing in the quantitative classification of rice varieties.

Abstract: The objectives of this research are: to study the characteristics of students in the Faculty&#xD;
of Engineering at Rajamangala University of Technology Pra Nakorn, North Bangkok Campus,&#xD;
that influence to the risk of withdrawal from Calculus 2 for Engineers; to predict the risk of&#xD;
withdrawal from Calculus 2 for Engineers; and to use the results of the study for planning and&#xD;
solving the problems of withdrawal from Calculus 2 for Engineers. The sample is 226 students in&#xD;
the Faculty of Engineering at Rajamangala University of Technology who enrolled the Calculus 2&#xD;
for engineers in the second semester of the academic year 2009. The data are from the&#xD;
questionnaire. The factors considered are grad point average, the number of enrollments for the&#xD;
Calculus 1 for engineers, Calculus 1 for Engineers grade, the number of courses that emphasize&#xD;
on calculation that were enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2009, the sacrifices&#xD;
of students for the Calculus 2 for Engineers course and the need to withdraw from Calculus 2 for&#xD;
Engineers course before other courses. The logistic regression model in which the parameters are&#xD;
estimated by using Bayesian methods is used for analyzing the data. The study shows that the&#xD;
factors that influence to the risk of withdrawal from the Calculus 2 for Engineers are grade point&#xD;
average, Calculus 1 for Engineers grade, the number of courses that emphasize on calculation that&#xD;
were enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2009 and the sacrifices of students for&#xD;
the Calculus 2 for Engineers and the need to withdraw from Calculus 2 for Engineers before other&#xD;
courses. The factor that does not influence to the risk of withdrawal from the Calculus 2 for&#xD;
Engineers is the number of enrollments for the Calculus 1 for Engineers.

      <description>Title: Species diversity and reproductive phenology of Podostemaceae in Na Hahaeo District, Loei Province, Northeastern Thailand.
Authors: Werukamkul, Petcharat; Ampornpan, La-aw
Abstract: The species composition of Podostemaceae was studied in Loei, northeastern Thailand from November 2009 to July 2010 by extensive surveying in the rapids and waterfalls inside and outside of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas. The samples collected are classified into 2 subfamilies, which are Tristichoideae and Podostemoideae. The former contains 2 genera and 3 species, Dalzellia kailarsenii, Terniopsis sp. 1, Terniopsis sp. 2. The latter has 4 genera and 9 species, Hanseniella heterophylla, Hydrobryum japonicum, Hydrobryum loeicum, Hydrobryum tardhuangense, Hydrobryum vientianense, Hydrobryum sp. 1, Hydrobryum sp. 2, Polypleurum sessile, Thawatchaia trilobata. The highest number of species occurs in Hydrobryum with 6 species following by Terniopsis with 2 species. The other four genera have one species each. Based on morphological and molecular analyses revealed that 2 species of the genus Hydrobryum are new and 2 taxa of Terniopsis are also new species. Polypleurum sessile and Thawatchaia trilobata are new recorded in Loei province. The result from this study indicates that the genus richness is relatively high in Loei province which encompasses 60% of the total number of genera (10) in Thailand. The plants in vegetative phase are completely submersed in swiftly running water during a warm wet season (May-October). The plants flower and set fruits and seeds when exposing to air during water level drop in a cool dry season (November- February).
